The Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt
Osiris
- God of the underworld
- He was also believed to be the god of resurection and fertilty
- Brother/Husband of Isis, Brother of Nepthys and Set(h), Father of Horus
- Believed to have gave the Ancient Egyptians the gift of barley
- A large temple was built in honor of him in Abydos.
He is one of the five major gods.
Isis
- Isis is the Goddess of Magic, Motherhood, and Fertility
The name Isis means "Throne". That is why her headdress is a throne. She is also known as the Protector of the Dead and Goddess of Children. I, Isis, am all that has been, that is or shall be; no mortal man hath ever me unveiled," was inscribed on her temple.
She is one of the five major gods.
Horus
- God of the Sky.
- He is well know as the Protector of the Ruler of Egypt.
- His mother is Isis. His father is Osiris the God of the Underworld.
- When Osiris battled Set(h) and died, Isis prepared Horus for the battle between himself and Set(h). In the middle of the battle Horus lost one of his eyes.
- His eye became the symbol of protection for the Ancient Egyptians. He beat the God named Set(h) and instead of reining over the earth he chose to stay the god of the sky.
- His name means "falcon".
Bastet
- Protector of pregnant women
- She was a gentile, protective goddess
- Appeared as a women with the head of a cat
- Daughter of Ra, but regarded as the daughter of the creator god, Atum.
She is the goddess of cats.
Anubis
- Anubis is god of The Embalming of the Dead.
- He has the appearance of a jackal, because they are mostly seen in cemeteries, and are believed to watch over the dead.
- Anubis helped to embalm Osiris after he was killed by Set(h).
- He watched over the embalming of the dead.
- He is the son of Nephthys and Osiris.
- Anubis was the Guardian of Scales which is the Weighing of the Heart Ceramony.
- He was the father of the goddess, Kebechet.
Ra
- Ra is the God of the Sun.
His appearance is a man with a falcon head - His mother is Neith the Goddess of War, Hunting, and the Moon.
- It is believed that Nut, swallowed Ra and gave birth to him in the morning
- Many obelisks were built in his name.
- He is one of the five major gods.
Thoth
- Believed to give Ancient Egyptians the gift of hieroglyphic writing
- His appearance is a man with the head of an ibis, holding a writing palette
- He is connected with the moon.
Thoth is the god of Writing and knowledge.
Ma'at
- Goddess of truth, justice and harmony
- Her appearance is a women with a feather on her head
- Daughter of Ra
Atum
- First god to exist on Earth
- His name has two meanings "not to be" and "to be complete".
- Ancient Egyptians believed he created space, air, moisture, the sky and Earth
- They also believed that mankind and gods were created with his sweat and tears
Sobek
- His appearance is a man with the head of a crocidile
- God of fertility and the nile
- Sometimes took the role of an ancient creator god
- There was a temple built in his name on the banks of the Nile in Upper Egypt
Ptah
- Theology was very difficult to understand
- He was called the "Lord of Truth"
He is the god of creation, the arts, and fertility.
He is the husband of Sekhmet and father of Neferetum./
He is one of the five major gods.
